In OSOGBO — A middle aged member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Osun State simply identified as Kunle was, Sunday, shot dead during a fracas between two factions of the party in Edunabon, Ife North Local Government Area of the state.
According to sources, the recent clash was said to be an aftermath of leadership tussle which has been rocking the party in the local government since last year.
It was further gathered that the PDP had been battling with leadership crisis since the assumption of office of the chairman of the party in the council, Mr Sam Oyetade.
It was learnt that a leader of the party in the state who is also a governorship aspirant of the party was not favorably disposed to the emergence of Oyetade as the party chairman and had made efforts to get him removed to no avail.
Sources revealed that trouble started at the ward meeting of the party held at the Local Authority Primary School, Edunabon at about 4.00 pm on Sunday when some loyalists of the governorship aspirant stormed the venue of the meeting and called for the removal of Oyetade as the party chairman.
However, loyalists of Oyetade resisted attempts to remove him and this resulted in a bloody clash between the two factions.
It was gathered that the late Kunle was allegedly shot by one of the members of the party at the meeting and he eventually died before he was taken to a hospital.
A Police source who craved for anonymity confirmed the incident, saying the Police were investigating the matter.
However, the Publicity Secretary of the state chapter of the party, Prince Bola Ajao, when contacted said the state secretariat of the party was not yet briefed on the matter, adding that the matter would be properly investigated by the state executive council of the party.
